Đền Lăng Sương Temple

Trung Nghĩa Commune, Thanh Thủy District, Phú Thọ Province

Cultural Heritage Site (2 reviews, 4.5 stars)

Đền Lăng Sương is part of the Tản Viên Sơn Thánh worship complex located along the Đà River and in the flatland of the Northern Delta region. This temple dates back to the time of Thục An Dương Vương, with renovations during the Lê dynasty (981-1009). It underwent significant restoration during the Nguyễn dynasty in the seventh year of Thiệu Trị’s reign (June 19, 1847).

Situated in Trung Nghĩa commune, Thanh Thủy, Phú Thọ, Đền Lăng Sương is a significant spiritual site within the traditional beliefs of Vietnam. Tản Viên Sơn Thánh is recognized as the head deity of the “four immortals” in Vietnamese folk beliefs. With deep reverence and admiration, people have elevated Tản Viên to the position of the “supreme deity,” the “first blessing deity” in traditional Vietnamese beliefs. Đền Lăng Sương proudly stands as the land that gave birth to the Holy Tản.

This can be considered the “birthplace” of the representative deity in Vietnamese folk beliefs. Alongside the worship of Đức Thánh Tản, Đền Lăng Sương also venerates Thánh Mẫu—the one credited with giving birth to Thánh Tản. The worship of Mẫu here harmoniously blends with the general Vietnamese beliefs in figures such as Mẹ Âu Cơ, Mother Earth, and Mother of the Nation.

Đền Lăng Sương features a spacious ground and an architectural style that exudes antiquity and solemnity. Enduring rain, sunshine, and historical challenges, the temple suffered significant damage. In 1991, the local government and the community undertook the restoration of Đền Lăng Sương on a vast land covering 3,000 square meters. The complex includes the Temple Gate, Two Ladies Temple (Hai Cô), Thiên Thanh well, memorial house, resting pavilion, desert and oasis for worship, and the mausoleum for the Holy Mother.

This is the only temple in Vietnam that worships the entire family of Đức Thánh Tản and is also the root in the Tản Viên Sơn worship complex in Vietnam. It marks the Trường Sa beach in Trung Độ where Lạc Long Quân and Âu Cơ met, beginning the legendary marriage and giving birth to the Lac and Rồng lineage—ancestors of the Vietnamese people.

Recognized and classified as a National Historical Site by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) under Decision No. 25/2005/QD-BVHTT dated July 12, 2005, Đền Lăng Sương holds profound historical, cultural, and spiritual values.
