MAI CHAU VALLEY
Visiting Phu Tho in the spring is truly ideal. You will admire the magnificent yet poetic scenery of rocky mountains, caves, and valleys floating in mist. Especially, Mai Chau Valley, a wonderful stop on the journey, will give you the feeling of “slow living.”
Mai Chau, located in Phu Tho Province, lies just 140 km northwest of Hanoi. The valley is a beautiful painting of mountain life, created by many natural and cultural elements.
The valley is wide, flat, and fertile, embraced by towering mountains stretching along vast rice fields. The climate is cool all year round, softened by morning dew and afternoon mist. Traditional stilt house villages cluster at the foot of the mountains, beside peaceful rice fields, creating a charming and poetic landscape. Mai Chau is home to many attractions such as Lac Village, Pom Coong Village, Thung Khe Pass, Mo Luong Cave, Van Village, and Go Lao Waterfall.
No matter the season, you can always feel the unique rhythm of life here: the purity of the living environment, the mesmerizing scenery of mountains, homes, and people, and the colorful panorama of the valley.
Mai Chau is always enchanting with its natural beauty—the rice fields, forests, traditional stilt houses, and the warm hospitality of its people. The fresh, mild climate soothes the soul, helping visitors release worries and stress.
From Dragon Head Mountain, the panoramic view of Mai Chau Valley is unmatched. From above, you can admire the grandeur of mountains embracing the valley, with the landscape unfolding like a multi-colored painting: the green and gold of rice fields, the earthy hues of houses, and the lush green of forests.
In the early morning, the entire valley is veiled in mist, creating a soft, tranquil atmosphere. By evening, floating clouds stretch across the mountains and settle in the valley, giving the scene a magical, poetic charm.
When stopping in Mai Chau, walking along village paths is the best way to immerse yourself in the beauty of rural life. You can also rent a bicycle (from 20,000–50,000 VND per ride) to explore the valley at your own pace.
A highlight of Mai Chau is Lac Village, famous for its homestay services. Visitors can stay in lovely stilt houses equipped with modern conveniences. Security here is excellent—locals rarely lock their doors at night. Dining is both delicious and reasonably priced, offering authentic flavors.
The best time to visit Mai Chau is during the cool season, especially the rice harvest. From above, the golden rice fields stretch like embroidered carpets crafted by human hands, while the afternoon mist and smoke from village kitchens create a dreamlike atmosphere. During harvest season, the valley looks like a living painting.
Mai Chau is also closely tied to the famous poem “Tay Tien” by poet Quang Dũng. Standing above the valley, one recalls his verses:
“Oh, Tay Tien rice steaming with fragrance / Mai Chau, the season of sticky rice.”
The scent of freshly harvested sticky rice will delight every visitor to Mai Chau.
Any time of year, Mai Chau offers peace and beauty to soothe the mind. Here, you can also enjoy unique local specialties such as hill duck, free-range pork, wild pig with “ruou can” (rice wine drunk through bamboo straws), grilled chicken, roasted crickets, sticky rice, Mai Ha wine, forest bee pupae, sour bamboo shoots, and “com lam” (bamboo-tube rice).
