As the Lunar New Year approaches, it’s not hard to come across the vibrant hues of green, yellow, and red as various flowers compete to showcase their beauty in the flower and ornamental plant craft village of Phương Viên, located in Tân Phương commune, Thanh Thủy district, Phú Thọ province. This is the busiest and most bustling time of the year for the locals, as they harvest flowers for sale and attract a large number of visitors who come to admire, play, and purchase flowers and ornamental plants.

According to the elders in the village, the flower and ornamental plant craft in Phương Viên has been maintained and developed for over 30 years. Initially, residents primarily cultivated traditional flowers such as daisies, roses, and money plants. However, responding to market mechanisms, increasing demands, and changing tastes in flower preferences, the villagers expanded to plant new varieties such as Dutch tulips, sunflowers, various French roses, lily flowers, trumpet flowers, and more.
While flowers are grown year-round, Tet (Lunar New Year) is one of the three main harvest seasons to supply the market. Apart from flowers, ornamental plants are also a strength of Phương Viên village, featuring many branded plant varieties and well-known nurseries. Not only do they supply seedlings, grade 1 and 2 plants, but artisans in the village also sculpt various artistic plants, ranging from single-handed to six-handed, giving each plant a unique cultural and spiritual value.
The flowers are mainly sold in local markets, and residents bring them to markets throughout the district. With affordable prices, suitable for consumer tastes, the flower market in Phương Viên provides a variety of flowers to meet consumer demands. In addition to flowers, the village also has various winter vegetables.
As the socio-economic conditions improve and the living standards of the people rise, the flower and ornamental plant enthusiasts engage in activities throughout the year. However, Tet Nguyen Dan is the peak time for supplying the largest quantity of flowers and ornamental plants to the market, also being the “harvest season” that brings the highest income of the year for flower growers.
Every year, as Tet approaches, flower gardens burst into vivid colors, becoming an attractive destination for tourists from all directions to visit and enjoy the flowers. The colorful pots and bouquets have become a highlight of Thanh Thủy, creating a beautiful springtime picture. Visiting Phương Viên flower village is not only an opportunity to admire the flowers but also a chance to learn about flower cultivation, capturing beautiful moments amidst the brilliant flower fields. Tourists will be impressed by the talented artisans, their meticulous work, and the patience they put into their craft.
